Celebrating Dr. Mark Barone Retirement

Celebrating Dr. Mark Barone Retirement

After 32 years of dedicated service to the Warsaw and surrounding Wyoming County communities, Dr. Mark Barone, is setting his sights on a well-deserved retirement and spending more time with his wife, Laurie, three children and their spouses, and three grandchildren.

Dr. Mark began his career after graduating from SUNY at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine in 1985. After completing a year long General Practice Residency at Buffalo General Hospital, and practicing as an Associate Dentist at several Buffalo area offices, he settled down in Warsaw in 1988, setting his sights on improving the dental health of this community.

The entire Warsaw and Wyoming county communities benefitted from Dr. Marks dental expertise and passion for learning new dental techniques. Dr. Mark was recently awarded a certificate from the New York State Dental Association for 1500 hours of Continuing Dental Education, an honor he truly cherishes.

Dr. Mark also has a passion for “paying it forward” to his profession. He has volunteered as an active member for 30 years in the local Eighth District Dental Society (which has 900 dentist members in the eight counties of WNY), serving as President in 2006. He has also been teaching dental students as an Assistant Clinical Instructor at UB Dental School since 2012, in which he truly enjoys. Dr. Mark will continue these two endeavors into his retirement.

All of us here at Summit Family Dental Care will miss Dr. Mark, and will never forget his contributions to our practice, patients, staff, and the communities of Warsaw and Wyoming County. Please join us in wishing Dr. Mark all the best in his retirement.

Healthy smile, healthy you: The importance of oral health

Healthy smile, healthy you: The importance of oral health

Regular dentist visits can do more than keep your smile attractive – they can also tell dentists a lot about your overall health, including whether or not you may be at risk for chronic disease.

New research suggests that the health of your mouth mirrors the condition of your body as a whole. For example, when your mouth is healthy, chances are your overall health is good, too. On the other hand, if you have poor oral health, you may have other health problems.

Research also shows that good oral health may actually prevent certain diseases from occurring.

Gum disease and health complications

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, there is a relationship between gum (periodontal) disease and health complications such as a stroke and heart disease. Women with gum disease also show higher incidences of pre-term, low birth-weight babies.

Other research shows that more than 90% of all systemic diseases (diseases involving many organs or the whole body) have oral manifestations, including swollen gums, mouth ulcers, dry mouth and excessive gum problems. Such diseases include:

Diabetes
Leukemia
Oral Cancer
Pancreatic Cancer
Heart Disease
Kidney Disease

Since most people have regular oral examinations, their dentist may be the first health care provider to diagnose a health problem in its early stages.

Poor oral health can lead to problems

If you don’t take care of your teeth and gums, your poor oral hygiene can actually lead to other health problems, including:

Oral and facial pain.According to the Office of the Surgeon General, this pain may be largely due to infection of the gums that support the teeth and can lead to tooth loss. Gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease, and advanced gum disease affect more than 75% of the U.S. population.
Problems with the heart and other major organs.Mouth infections can affect major organs. For example, the heart and heart valves can become inflamed by bacterial endocarditis, a condition that affects people with heart disease or anyone with damaged heart tissue.
Digestion problems.Digestion begins with physical and chemical processes in the mouth, and problems here can lead to intestinal failure, irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive disorders.

What you can do

Seeing a dentist regularly helps to keep your mouth in top shape and allows your dentist to watch for developments that may point to other health issues. A dental exam can also detect poor nutrition and hygiene, growth and development problems and improper jaw alignment. Provide your dentist with a complete medical history and inform him or her of any recent health developments, even if they seem unrelated to your oral health.

At home, you can practice good oral hygiene:

Brush twice a dayfor at least two minutes, using fluoridated toothpaste.
Floss dailyto remove plaque from places your toothbrush can’t reach.
Eat a healthy dietto provide the nutrients necessary (vitamins A and C, in particular) to prevent gum disease.
Avoid cigarettes and smokeless tobacco, which are known to contribute to gum disease and oral cancer.
Visit the dentist regularlyfor cleanings and exams. This is one of the most effective ways to detect the early signs of gum disease.

Healthy smile, healthy you: The importance of oral health

Spring Cleaning – For Your Smile!

Spring is on its way! For many of you, this is the time to thoroughly clean your homes of dust and cobwebs, get rid of clutter and let a breath of fresh air into your life. But what about your smile? Even with regular daily brushing and flossing, routine cleanings, or “prophylaxis” (literally “preventive treatment of disease”) at the dentist should be an important part of your spring routine. A twice-annual examination, check-up, and cleaning are highly recommended. In fact, according to the Academy of General Dentistry, getting a professional cleaning a least twice a year has a significant impact on the quality of a person’s long-term oral health. In the case of professional teeth cleaning, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

It Makes a Difference!

Regular cleanings, including scaling and polishing by your dentist or hygienist, will remove plaque and tartar (mineralized plaque) which builds up over time and is nearly impossible to remove with regular brushing or flossing. Dentists use special tools or ultrasonic sound waves to help remove plaque or tartar. Without a regularly scheduled cleaning, plaque and tartar can attack the gums, which can lead to gingivitis and a number of other complications.

Professional cleanings and routine exams can also bolster your at-home dental hygiene routine and give your dentist a chance to take a close look at your mouth to ensure that you don’t have any problems that have gone undetected.

On top of keeping your smile squeaky clean and making sure your oral health is in check, a professional cleaning appointment gives you the opportunity to have a conversation with your dentist about your daily dental routine or any concerns you may have. Regular exams and cleanings can give your dentist a good idea of what your habits are, allowing them to suggest changes you can make to improve your oral health.

Take time for yourself and your teeth – schedule a spring cleaning appointment with your dentist hygienist at Summit Family Dental Care.
